| | annoyed | ] | While retrieving laundry from the line I noticed that the cat had barfed just outside the back door. This is gross, yes, but my heart sang with jubilation that she'd finally, at last, managed to vomit outside the house rather than on the landing or in one of her favoured spots where people are likely to step in it. I resolved to hose the barf into the flower border at some point, and went on my way.
Then five minutes later, going to the dining room cupboard for a plate, I stepped in a different pile of cold, squishy cat puke that had been planted right in the doorway. It became apparent that the stuff outside was merely a decoy to lull me into a false sense of security.
The foe is more wily and cunning than first thought. I must not underestimate her again. ¬_¬ |

Couple of sketches for you, just so this isn't a completely gratuitous icon post.
( AXEBEARD BEARDAXE. )
Yeah, it's a dwarf. Or dorf, in the vernacular. I was trying to come up with a look that was a little different from the straight-line polygons of 4e D&D, without just making them into quasi-Vikings with the knotwork and so on. I think I went a little bit samurai, though.
( I'm the Tarrasque! Krie! Krie! )
This one came out of a discussion with James about how the design for the Tarrasque (basically a creature designed to be the biggest baddest motherfucker in the entire Monster Manual, enough to challenge even the cheesiest and most powerful of PCs) kind of sucks. It's goofy (imagine it shouting the subject of this post). The slightly revised design for 4e is a bit better, but still lacking something. Sooo we put together a list of Tarrasque traits from the game mechanics - the claws, and the tail, and the teeth, and the carapace, and the hugeness - and went from there. The sketch above is the outcome of that, trying to come up with a pleasing body shape and posture and all that kind of thing, and the final design's the big one at the bottom - borrowing elements from sloths (big fuckin' claws) and komodo dragons (tough hide, stocky limbs) and armadilloes (armoured carapace) and stuff like that.
And, uh, that's quite a ramble, so. I'll stop. n_n |

Wabash Cannonball: A board game about investing in train companies or something, which is pervasive enough to be a subgenre in and of itself. I believe I irredeemably lost during the setup phase; if that sort of thing is possible, I think it puts some onus on the person teaching to talk a little about strategy. Masquerade: Another weird Japanese card game, with a lot of stuff going on. Enjoyed it, though I'm not sure who else would. |

| Website revision stuffs. |
[Jul. 19th, 2008|01:37 am] |
Things to do, based on advice from industry-experienced dude:
- Make it clearer - It needs to be absolutely clear what my site's about from the very first glance. This also means that I should probably choose a niche in which to specialise, since "artist" is apparently a bit too broad and vague nowadays - it's all divided up into environment artists and character artists and creature artists and so on.
- Make it more focussed - At present my site's somewhere between being personal and professional, which isn't really the way to go. There's stuff for prospective employers to look at, but there's also some goofy stuff that's not exactly appropriate in tone. If it's going to be something I pimp out as a sort of online portfolio then it needs to focus on that.
- Consolidate the "WORK" and "ART" sections - With the previous point in mind, having two separate galleries is unnecessary. At present it's got my general art stuff and a separate portfolio section, which is kind of confusing and redundant. Instead I need to just pick out my best work as an example of what I can do, and drop the rest as irrelevant to the site's purposes. Culling is required.
- Reorganise images by medium - This is instead of dividing them into "finished work" and "sketches" categories, as that's selling myself short - like saying there's "good stuff that I'm pleased with" and "rubbish stuff that I'm less pleased with but show anyway". I've gone through the SQL table that organises my gallery and divided the images up into "digital" (for pixel-painting and 3D stuff), "paint & ink" (for watercolours, acrylics and the better ink pieces) and "pen & pencil" (for the sketches and scribbles and such which generally aren't polished pieces). So it still starts with the super-shiny digital art stuff that I'm most proud of, but is more positive in tone.
- Make the "ABOUT" section more professional - This needs rewriting and reworking until it's more like a mini-CV, with additional attention to talking about how great I am and stuff. Also put my CV link and contact info in there rather than on a separate page. Maybe even put the ABOUT stuff on the front page, as at present it's got... uh, instructions on how to navigate around the site and how to click on links and stuff, which should be blindingly obvious to even the most blithering of idiots. So that needs to change, as it's inane and pointless.
Otherwise the site's design is apparently pretty good - he liked the style of the navigation icons and the simple layout, which is gratifying, so most of the work required is to do with working on the content and putting stuff in the right place. Should be easy enough. At least until I get some kind of awesome idea about how to make the site pant-wettingly fantastic but which requires that I get entangled in PHP coding and stuff again. Because I can't leave well enough alone. |

| | Jonathan Coulton - The Future Soon | ] | Yesterday was a pretty good day. First I went to visit a chap my mother knows through school (she taught one of his kids) who used to work in the videogames industry. He had a lot of useful advice and encouragement and stuff, which was motivating and much-needed. As a consequence I'm going to be amending my website somewhat over the next couple of days, and will probably ramble more extensively on the matter later.
Next I went into Reading and hung around for a few hours - mostly lurking in the library and listening to several episodes of Fear the Boot that I'd downloaded. It's a podcasts based around tabletop RPGs and suchlike dorkiness, and is pretty entertaining and informative. Podcasts are kind of tricky, though, because listening to an actual discussion/conversation for most of an hour can prove taxing, and sometimes I find myself zoning out or getting distracted and losing the thread of what's being talked about. Attention span plz.
In the evening I met up with people from Eclectic Games and had a "thank you for helping us move shop" dinner at Zero Degrees, which is a restaurant/microbrewery that's really rather good. The peri-peri chicken pizza was delicious (and face-searingly spicy), the chocolate fudge cake was decadent and awesome, and the beer was particularly nice. Or at least, I liked it. I'm not exactly a beer connoisseur, and if I'm not drinking cider my usual drink is Fosters or Heineken or some other variety of cooking lager - I really dislike bitters, which is why I tend to stick with the pisswater lagers. But last night I had a number of pints of a rrrrather good elderflower beverage, so I may have to experiment more in future. I'm not sure if it was an ale or beer or what, but it was good. Apparently you can buy it by the keg if you find a variety you like.
Tonight I was going to go to the Friday night games night, but sloth won out and so I'm home instead and vaguely prodding at my website. I'm going to need to remind myself how this PHP thing works, I think. |

I really was very close to getting hermit crabs the other day, by the way ^^; Until I found out they can live for at least as long as cats O_O And I'm not quite capable of committing to a pet for quite that long at the moment! On the plus side, after 4 straight hours of reading, I am now a Hermit Crab Care Encyclopedia ¬_¬
They are seriously awesome though. I've never seen the attraction in keeping fish, snakes, spiders, etc, but hermit crabs actually do something - they climb and change shells frequently, change colour when they moult, and will 'chirrup' to each other ^^ (You should always have more than one, they're very sociable)
So they're definitely something I'll consider again when I'm settled somewhere. Probably when I don't have the space/garden/time/money for a cat. There was also the issue of acquiring some - the only UK chain store that supplied them withdrew them all last year because, in the words of the guy I spoke to, "they kept dying" ><; So I'd have to get them sent by post from somewhere. Which is a horrible, cruel thing to do to any sentient creature ><
So anyway, I got some Triops instead (Seamonkeys are so 90s ;)). Don't know what a Triop is? Oh, you will, soon :D |

I am currently upgrading my iMac to Leopard.
The only reason that I am doing this is because my MacBook also has Leopard, and in order to transfer data between computers over the firewire, the target computer has to have the same OS or a more recent version.
The only reason I have to transfer my MacBook's data over to my iMac is because, after almost 3 years, it has broken. It was still covered by the extended warranty, so there was no charge for fixing it, but the hard drive was irretrievably broken. They said they'd try to transfer the data from the old HD (it showed up as a mountable HD, but just because it showed up doesn't mean it's useable, I guess), but apparently they failed, because I now have an empty computer.
Poopy.
I can't complain too much, because I didn't lose much and it didn't cost anything, but still, poopy. |

| A Tarot Reading Before Vacation |
[Jul. 17th, 2008|10:34 am] |
My vacation starts Saturday and I've pulled nine cards, one for each day to get a bearing on my week.
Saturday 7/19: 2 of Wands
Wands are fire in this deck (Robin Wood) however the first thing I notice is that ther is pretty much no fire in this picture. Instead, a well-dressed man stands at a castle wall overlooking the sea. He holds a wand in one hand and a globe in the other. The wand here is a symbol of power, and the globe does signify that he holds the world in his hands. He is waiting for his ships to come in.
Needless to say, this is a pretty decent card. If I am the man in the card, then the foundations that I've laid and the plans that I've made will come to fruition on this day. Specifically how I see it is that David has now come to a point where he's willing to try eating vegetables and if I want to make the radical changes in diet that I've been working on, my time has come. We also have a birthday party we're taking Aaron to. This party is actually a karate party and I'm very excited. Aaron is small and will always be small. Therefore I want him to be able to handle himself, meaning that I want him to learn karate. But Aaron is reluctant to even try because he is afraid he'll get hurt. I'm hoping this party will show him that he does not need to worry about getting hurt. So maybe that'll work my way too.
Day 2, Sunday. Card: King of Wands
The king stands in a desert and is wearing clothes that almost appear to be made of fire. He holds his wand in his hand as a symbol of his power and a salamander is at his feet.
Court cards very often represent people in the querent's life. In this case an adult male born under a fire sign. I'm married to one of those. So chances are Sunday's going to be all about David and what he wants.
Day 3, Monday. Card: Ace of Wands
Yes, there are lots of wands here. Aces embody all that their element represents and signify beginnings. So here on Monday is where the changes begin to take place. This is exciting.
Day 4, Tuesday. Card: Four of Cups
Cups are associated with the element of water, which is emotion. In this card a rather angry-looking young man leans against a tree with three cups standing on the ground in front of him. The fourth cup is floating in the air above the other three and emitting a glow. But the man does not see any of this as he is staring off into space.
This I see as a warning that Tuesday is not going to be an easy day and I need to focus on the abundance in front of me and not on things that I can't have.
Day 5, Wednesday. Card: The World
The World is a symbol of rebirth. It is a rite of passage: You have completed this stage and are now moving on to a new stage. It is the end and a new beginning and all the wonderful things that come from great accomplishment all rolled into one. An important card? Heck yeah!
Therefore Wednesday may well be the most important day of the week. Why? Not sure yet. I haven't even made plans for Wednesday yet.
Day 6, Thursday. Card: Judgment
Judgment in Robin Wood's deck shows a naked woman rising from a fiery cauldron with a pheonix rising from the ashes behind her. We're back to fire imagery. It just continues on. This is another symbol of transformation. Actually in the sequence of the deck it is the card that comes just before The World. So it's position here is interesting. Am I regressing? I think not because of the extremely upbeat nature of these cards.
Another important day. No plans for Thursday yet either, so I don't know what could be happening. But certainly my transformation continues into this day.
Day 7, Friday. Card: The Sun
More interesting juxtaposition here. The sun chronologically falls immediately before Judgment. So we've got a reverse sequence of three. And naturally, the Sun is chock full of fire imagery. In the deck, the Sun is the super happy fun card. This intrigues me because I do have plans for Friday, and I didn't think they'd turn out anywhere near that good.
Friday we're going to the Cape. This in itself can be good. But STG has its annual congregational meeting on Friday night and I really feel the need to go. So I'll be riding to the Cape with the fam, then driving back for the meeting and then driving back to the Cape afterwards. In the end it'll probably be 6 or more hours of driving for me. So my expectations for fun on Friday are fairly low. The cards say otherwise and I think I need to adjust my mindset accordingly.
Day 8, Saturday. Card: 10 of Pentacles
Pentacles are associated with the element Earth, which represents the practical things in life, home, family, job, etc. 10 is the number of culmination. So this is where all things associated with Earth really shine forth in their best. The card itself pictures a very happy and prosperous family together. In short, this is the super happy fun card for families. And that's important.
Saturday is big. We'll be on the Cape and David's family has planned a surprise 40th birthday party for him under the guise of a family photo swap day. As far as I know, David has no clue. So Saturday will be all about family and it looks like it'll go extremely well.
Day 9, Sunday. Card: 6 of Wands
Back to more fire. In this card a young man is returning home in triumph upon a white horse. The sun is emblazoned on his tunic and on the flag that flows from the wand in his hand. There is a cheering crowd behind him and they hold five more wands. This is a card of victory.
Sunday is the day we return from the Cape. I have a workshop to attend in the evening but otherwise it's a pretty laid back day schedule-wise. And I think this card shows that it will be a fitting ending to ann excellent week.
Yay! |

I need help cause I have been so addicted to playing with the Spore Creature Creator since downloading the free version from the Spore Website. It's so much fun and gives me a cool way of doing something creative. I managed to get the free version working again after getting some help from a nice friend on the UK Spore forums. It turned out that it was the EA download manger that was causing the problem. Once I un-installed that the creature creator worked just fine. I had fun playing with the free version for a day or two but then I decided I wanted more options and bought the full version of the creature creator on amazon. It was only five pounds so I thought why not just get it. I'm glad I did the extra creature part options are worth the five pounds and I've had even more fun making freaky looking creatures. I've uploaded some of my favourite creature creations on My Sporepedia Profile Page to share with other Spore fans. Mine are quite lame compared to some of the ones I've seen that other people have made but I still feel proud of them anyway. I'm just so excited for this game and can't wait to finally play it when it eventually comes out in September. |

The World Ends With You: DS action RPG. Fun, even if I'm a wuss and ignore the top screen 90% of the time. Dungeons and Dragons, 4th edition: The new D&D. Combat is better, other stuff less so, though I'm not sure if that's the fault of the game or playing with an entirely different group of people from normal. El Grande: Eurogame about influence in the provinces of medieval Spain or something. I actually won this one on my first play, which doesn't usually happen. I think most games on that level of complexity need about two plays to properly evaluate, but I wouldn't mind playing it again. Fairy Tale: Japanese card game with drafting rules and stuff. I think I could push it on people I know who are into anime and whatnot. (And some more I'm forgetting, probably) |

Lucky peoples get a month's worth of information at once!! :P
- Belley is still depressed. We have not gotten another dog yet. More on that later. Aside from being depressed, she also decided to get sick a few weeks ago. She has had occasional GI issues this year that flared up again. She started acting really quiet (even more so than she has been lately because she's depressed), had diarrhea and vomited a few times. She's better now, and everyone at work laughed at me when I brought my "sick, lethargic" dog into work, because she was so happy to be there she was bouncing like the big doofus that she is.
- Charlie definitely has cancer. Our vet re-ultrasounded him three weeks after his first ultrasound, and his kidney had grown measurably in that short of a time. Thankfully, aside from one day, he still has not been acting sick at all (but he scared the crap out of me that day -- I called into work more than ten times trying to catch the vet between surgeries that day). Besides being skin and bones, you wouldn't know he's sick. He's even been coming upstairs despite Belle's presence (probably because she's been quieter than normal). I do have to torture him on a regular basis -- he gets injections of famotidine twice a day and subcutaneous fluids once a day. One of the reasons (besides lack of time on weekends) that we still haven't gotten another dog is that I don't want to stress him out more than necessary.
- My grandmother was here for most of a week last month. She was here long enough. :) I love her, but she tends to start to drive me nuts after a while.
- I graduated. Of course, I'd already had my diploma for a couple of months (take note of the "Summa Cum Laude"). The keynote speaker was even interesting. :)
- I got stood up. Royally. :P
- Rayna turned 8. Don't ask me how she got that old.
- I've been knitting a fair amount. I knitted one (and have started the other) of the coolest sock I've made so far (it's for Jason). I started knitting a sweater, and then frogged it (too big!). I liked the pattern, though. I've been plugging away at my shawl . At this rate, I'll finish it in a year or so (I kid, I kid!). I started (and have almost finished a marketbag. I've even done some work on the interminable scarf.
- The first day of the Bristol Renaissance Faire was Saturday. It was fun. :) I got a new dress like the one mom is wearing in this picture. Mom got a new bodice, and dad even got some garb.
- I've been working a fair amount. I've even not been overly annoyed by work lately. For the most part, anyway. ;)
